Pros
It is hard for the average citizen to understand the copyright laws. Even the government has problems prosecuting the people behind the larger online cites because there are multiple ways to get around the laws. Copyright laws are more mysterious than the laws concerning shoplifting or violent crimes. Copyright restrictions on digital media are a waste of resources in the public sector. There are more serious and violent crimes currently taking place that call for more attention than any piracy issue. The government has to realize that their laws against piracy came too late and that the technology has evolved faster than they are able to change the laws to make them appropriate.
Removing copyright restrictions would have little to any effect on the revenue generated from cinemas and concerts, which is one of the major income sources for these industries. In today’s society more people than ever go to movies and concerts. People will gladly pay the fees associated with going to movies or concerts, because they do not only pay for the content, they pay for the experience. Removing copyright restrictions would be good for the customers, because the artists or the owners of the content would have to set up more shows and the market would be more competitive causing the prices to decrease.
It is clear that today’s copyright laws are outdated. The police seem to not put in the necessary effort to chase down these law-breakers even though the number of digital pirates is in the hundreds of millions. It is all about the privacy of the population in the future, it is about avoiding surveillance societies where the government will monitor everything we do with our personal property.
